Contents of Praklay

Praklay is an epoxy based clay made up of micro ceramic clay, soap stone powder (magnesium aluminium silicate), marble powder, elastomers and epoxy. The special NON STICK powder supplied with clay facilitates easy handling. Praklay has excellent strength and brilliant elasto- plasticity.

How to use Praklay

The clay comes in two parts, base colored clay two parts, and Hardener clay... off white..one part. Each set comes with NON STICK powder for sticky free handling. The powder can also be used for thickening and stiffening the clay..

The ratio of colour clay to hardener is 2:1

Mix clay in small quantites to avoid quick hardening and wastage. Plan your requirements and remove the desired proportion of the ingredients. Knead the two components together till they are thoroughly mixed.

Improper kneading will lead to irregular hardening and unhardened clay. The enclosed marble powder is used as a stick resistant powder to knead the dough. The clay becomes warm in about 45 mins to an hour.

PRAKLAY PASSES THROUGH THE FOLLOWING STAGES

Clay/putty -

Elastic

Plastic

Firm

Hard

Stone hard

In plastic stage, the clay can be carved and designs or impressions drawn on the surface.  In firm stage you can trim the edges, cut off excess pieces with a knife/blade or smoothen the surfaces. Press down firmly with wax and oil applied on fingers, to give additional smoothness. You can moisten hands for easier handling.

In hard stage it is best to leave the product to dry and harden further until it reaches the stone hard stage.

Stone hard stage is extremely suitable for filing, sand papering, buffing, or polishing. You can drill or grind the product. Broken pieces are easily reattached with the same coloured clay. The product takes acrylic, water or oil paints and the surface can be coated with polyurethane, varnish or transparent resins. The clay can be easily handled by bare hands and is extremely plastic and smooth to sculpt.

Other uses of Praklay

Advantages of Praklay

  1.      No heating or firing. Curing is an exothermic process and hardening time is controlled by the dose of hardener. For slow hardening, use less hardener clay.

  2.      Different colours can be mixed. Clay can be coloured by adding Artists acrylic colours.

  3.      Invaluable for patchwork, repair and finishing of Larger statues.

  4.      Skinning technique can be used to produce sculptures of exceptional finish. In this, a ball of clay is rolled on a plastic sheet with a rolling pin to form a skin which can be applied on armatures or cut into strips for making models.

  5.      By adding extra hardener, an extra quick setting clay can be produced for quick rough forms.

  6.      For complex shapes, just twist lumps of praklay around support forms of crumpled newspapers, cloth etc., which can be removed after the clay sets.

  7.      Small sculptures and toys can be created by squeezing clay inside latex or silicone moulds and allowing it to set.

  8.      Complex shapes, difficult designs and intricate patterns become easy.

  9.      Can be used with syringes and bead making machine.

  10.  Gem stones, and decorative trinkets are fixed by just pushing them into appropriate spots in the elastic  stage

  11.  Clay consistency and thickness can be increased by adding NON STICK power supplied with the kit.

Health and Safety

1.      Epoxy resin sticks to palms. Wash hands with soap and water. Wipe with solvent/thinner. Apply Vaseline or coconut oil to palms after prolonged handling.

2.      0.5% population suffers from epoxy  allergy. That is two people in a hundred. If you are one of those unfortunates, you will feel severe itching on your palms. Dont use Praklay in this condition.

3.      Wear mask and avoid inhalation of dust while sanding, filling grinding or polishing.
